James “Jim” Dills, of Doniphan, NE. passed away Monday, January 11, 2021 in Omaha with his daughter Kathy by his side. There will be a private family service in the mountains.
Jim was born October 4, 1947 to Joyce and James Dills in Marion, North Carolina. He was the oldest of 3 children. As a young man, known as Jimmy Pyles in Greeley, Nebraska where he excelled in many high school sports especially track. He joined the Army after high school and served in Vietnam as a Tank Crew Member from 1966-1969. He was a highly decorated Vietnam War Veteran with a Purple Heart and was a POW.
He married Eileen Daily in 1967 while on leave. They raised a daughter and son in Grand Island. Jim was a salesman and attended all his children’s sporting and school activities. He was in the National Guard in Grand Island. He loved the mountains and spent time living in Colorado and Wyoming. He worked helping other Veterans wherever he went. He made a lot of good friends along the way. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wyoming.
Later in life he moved to Doniphan to be closer to his kids. He always missed the mountains. While in Doniphan he made “family” out of many friends he had made. He volunteered for the Doniphan Fire Department and was an EMT. He was on the Doniphan Village board along with being the Emergency Management Director of Doniphan.
He took more classes at Central Community College and received more degrees. He ran a bail bond business and did various jobs including running a shelter in Hastings. He was an avid storm chaser for most of his life. He truly loved horse racing and owned several horses that he raced.
Jim also loved watching his granddaughters play softball by live stream and in person when he could make it. If the live stream stopped working, he was the first to let you know.
He is survived by his children Kathleen Skiles (Brady) of Omaha, NE, Brian Dills (Celestte) of Atlanta, GA and Taffy O’Bier (Beau) of Sherman, TX; 7 grandchildren Kierney and Kaydence Skiles; Charles, Spencer, and Madeline Dills; Tabatha McReynolds and Dustin Nolan along with 3 great grandchildren; a sister Patricia (Don) Whelan of Grand Island, NE; longtime special friend Carmen Deese of Phoenix, AZ; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and very close family friends the Hannon family of Doniphan, NE.
He is proceeded in death by his parents Joyce Robideau and James G. Dills, wife Eileen Dills, a sister Karen Salpas, and many friends from Vietnam.
Memorials are suggested to the Disabled American Veterans or the POW/MIA Memorial in Olympia, WA.in Jim’s name.
